Swimming Readiness
Swimming and water safety are necessary skills for all children. Swimming pools are noisy, smelly visually stimulating and sometimes overwhelming for children. Many children benefit from 1:1 preparation and support around sensory, motor and/or communication issues before being ready to access mainstream lessons. Our aim is to help children feel comfortable in the pool so the transition to swimming lessons is enjoyable and fun.
Our approach is to embed intervention within purposeful and meaningful activities that actively engage children. Children learn about themselves and the world by playing and exploring a range of environments. Aqua therapy is a perfect forum to work on skills in a play-based, motivating manner. Water play can produce therapeutic benefits for many conditions, including Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD), Cerebral Palsy (CP), Down Syndrome, Global Developmental Delay (GDD), sensory regulation difficulties, hyperactive children and more.
Speech Pathologists love pool sessions for the extra focus and engagement it can bring children. Water can be a regulating tool for children and help them focus on developing their speech and language. Anything we can do in a clinic room we can do in the pool.
We are developing programs all the time. Look out for an upcoming social skills group!
What’s the enrolment process?
We start with a phone consult before booking you in at PARC.
Participating in an aquatic therapy program entails the same initial assessment and consultation onsite as our ‘on land’ services. As therapists, we need to evaluate and discuss your child’s abilities and goals to ensure aqua therapy will address each person’s individual needs.
